30/7/13 Versailles (2)

Ok...get ready for some serious bling...I'm not going to keep saying it, but that is all gold gilt & this is the 1st room we came into. All the ceilings & walls are covered in hand painted originals & all the floors are marble or semi precious stone.

All the chandeliers are crystal & glass (expensive back then).

The Royal Chapel...the King sat over the circle of blue carpet with the fir delyse embroidered inside & because no-one could have their back to the King & no-one could have their back to God, everyone had to stand sideways  to the centre of the Chapel. They weren't allowed to sit either.

Yes...gold.

What can I say...a hand painted ceiling.

King Louis was pretty keen on himself & had beautiful hair in his youth, but a bad case of typhus left him with almost no hair, which is when he started wearing flamboyant wigs, high heals, fancy clothes etc. A bit high maintenance I'd say.

The photos do not do this place any justice.

Room after room, it just boggles the mined the level of wealth displayed here.

Some of the walls, if they are not hand painted or covered in originals, are covered with marble...& gold of course.

The entry to the Hunting Room is announced on the door with the quiver & arrows & the hunting dog.

Are you starting to get the idea of how jaw dropping this place is. My neck is sore from looking up when I'm walking (bumped into a few people doing the same too).

Check out his lordships bed. It was deemed as good protocol to receive people in your bedroom, so I suppose you have to look your best at all times.

And a couple of oils of yourself won't go astray...so long as they are big, really big.
