17/7/13 Carcassonne Medieval City

It's a 15 minute walk to the City...& a 10 minute climb to 1 of the 4 entry points...North, south, east or west.

From the top of the towers you can see clearly for over 20km.

Finally made the top. The construction on this site was started by the Romans or earlier & carries on today in the form of renovations.

The City has a wall within the wall & was considered a strategic point being on the French/Spanish border & was considered impregnable in its day.

These walls housed an entire city population...the Lord & nobles, soldiers, trades etc. Their weak point is that they relied on the nearby Aud River for their water...not really helpful during the sieges.

Everything old is new again...the place is riddled with souvenirs, food & beverage & specialty stores.

These streets actually take local vehicles...but there is little extra room...I know because I got hit by one of the vehicle mirrors...what the!

One of the walk throughs on the entry towers. This stuff was built to last.

The boys settle in for a nice healthy French breakfast.

Ye olde Barrel O Lolly Shoppe...can you spot the sugar junkie...he's in heaven.
