17/7/17 (3)

A view from the inner rampart walkway overlooking the new city.

These walkways are narrow & their are now houses built on the inside of the wall.

Only the rich or important were able to afford this type of expense for their burial rights.

During sieges & wars, anyone important who died was buried in this temporary cemetery.

This is an ancient Roman Signpost that would advise traveller's of the distance they have travelled & how far to the next destination, sort of like an ancient GPS but less portable.

So when The Lord finally succumbed to the siege because of the lack of water & sickness in the City, he was shown no mercy by the Pope/King's army & after a short internment in this dungeon, he croaked. What happened to that religious bit about turning the other cheek & loving thy neighbour?

So one of the things I learnt about the times back then (by experience) was that they were smaller & shorter than me...yes these steps are as steep & narrow as they look!

The dude the Pope put on as Inquisitor had a large home built for him, because they gave the locals grief for the next 500 years...now that's a serious bit of payback for believing in an unseen being that's apparently not the same as the Pope's unseen being. Bet he was a sore loser at cards too?

Another view looking down on the tourist plebs.

So if you are a soldier, it's not all about fighting, bleeding & dying...there are some upsides...you get to sit on these nice comfy stone seats while you are shooting arrows down on all the baddies...cool, where do I sign up?
