19/7/13 Spain - Mataro 11km north of Barcellona

Pulled into our next campsite late afternoon with the intention of having a meal & an early night so we can have an early start in Barcelona tomorrow. This was the board outside the restaurant...interesting, if you don't eat it then perhaps you can wear it...mmm?

The Mediterranean in the background & a fierce game of bocce to pass the afternoon. They were really serious about the game too, I've never seen so much measuring!

We found out that in the main Mataro Plaza they have the final practice night for human pyramiding. Never heard of it & who wants an early night anyway, so we're on the bus to check it out.

This is a local ham shop...as you can see, the Spanish are really serious about their ham products.

Ahh...so this is human pyramiding...how cute theses girls were. The top one is about 4 or 5 years old.

The competitors all wrap themselves in these black scarves to support their backs & as a foothold for the climbers.

So it's still all girls, but they look like they are getting a bit serious now. This tower is 5 levels & all the people at ground level support the bottom levels or help the girls up or down off the towers. The guy in green in the foreground is calling out instructions & everyone in the crowd goes quiet as they start to build the towers, so the competitors can hear his voice.

The guys are getting involved now & the towers have people in the middle too. The way they scramble over, up & down each other...phew they must have some major core strength (& be good friends).

So it stars with a big crowd of what looks like 'mayhem', & then out pops 1 person. Check out the support they are giving his legs & thighs.

Then it just keeps growing & getting bigger. They don't muck around either, I suppose so that they don't wear out the bottom supporters who end up with over 30 people on top of them...amazing!

It just keeps building & not once did we see anyone waiver or hesitate...even the little kids just shimmied up & down like koala bears.

So is this impressive or not? They were fabulous to watch @ so worth the lack of sleep to see this.
The big competition is on Sunday & we won't be hear, but so glad we got to see this.

It's just as impressive to watch it collapse as it is for them to build it.
