25/7/13 (2)
They use the moat area now for horse eventing, which was held a few weeks ago.
The second bridge to the inner walled area of the Citadel. This was originally built from timber & could then be burned if there was an attack.
The wall is very thick with breaks or holes in the roof where they could drop stones or hot sand on the enemy. Sand was particularly good because it would get into firing mechanisms etc. The cut out in the stone on the left hand side is a cubby hole or hide out so that they could fire at the enemy & have less chance of being wounded.
There were 9 soldiers per room. They are now filling up with cafes, memorabilia & hand crafted items.
This is the alfresco dining area of the Hotel that has set up headquarters in the Citadel...great view. You can also camp here.
This is the view of the river from the Alfresco area. The river here is only 11km across & Fortresses were built on the islands you can see as further protection from invasion.
